What is decoupage?
Decoupage is moving a printed image onto a surface so it looks like it was always part of it. Paper, ink or fabric is laid down and sealed until the edge disappears, and the grain of the timber or the clarity of the glass still shows through.
Is decoupage the same as creative transfer?
Yes, and you will hear both here. Creative transfer is what Inas calls it; decoupage is the older word most people search for. Same afternoon, same result.
What can you decoupage onto?
Timber, glass and furniture are the usual three, and they behave differently. Timber takes the image into the grain, glass is worked from behind so the image reads through it, and painted furniture wants a light sand before anything goes on.
Is the finished piece waterproof?
Treat what you make in a workshop as decorative. The sealant resists a wiped spill, not a dishwasher or a rained-on windowsill. A piece meant to be washed needs more coats and more curing time than an afternoon allows.
Do I need any experience?
No. It is taught from the beginning and every material is on the table before anyone sits down. Decoupage is the most forgiving of the five activities, which is why it is the usual first one.
Can I bring my own piece to work on?
Yes, if it is something you can carry and the surface is sound. A tray, a small box, a jar, a stool. Say what you are thinking of bringing when you book, because a flaking painted surface needs preparing and that is worth knowing beforehand.
